Fish Pillow and Coaster Tutorial, Sew with Me

fish pillow

Appliquéd Fish Pillow

It’s fishing season here in MN! We wait many months for lake weather and I wanted to create a project celebrating warm temperatures!

This is an easy fish design, great if you are a beginner free motion stitcher. The design and instructions are available in my Etsy Shop here.

Stenciling on Fabric

Adding a Background

Because I used a simple creamed colored cotton fabric for the pillow top, I added some color with a stencil and Archival Ink by Ranger. I love using this ink because it is waterproof and permanent. I apply it with a make-up brush.

Ironing the Appliqués

I used bright colored plaid fabrics for the fish and black and white plaid for the pillow’s border. So fun!

Free-motion Stitching with Black Thread

Outlining the Shapes with Black Thread

I attached the fish using free-motion stitching and black thread. I also included a bonus project. Fish coasters! What wonderful decor for your sun room or lake home.

Here’s a step by step tutorial showing how I made this fish pillow and coasters. Enjoy!
