Mini Quilted Wall Hanging, A Nature Theme

This week’s project is a mini quilted wall hanging.  It is just the right size.  Larger projects sometimes seem overwhelming.  In this project, I incorporate many things I love; free-motion stitching, adding color with Derwent Inktense Pencils, fabric collage, and a fun way to hang the quilt.

The quilt is constructed with 2 layers of natural muslin and quilter’s fleece sandwiched in between. I start by laying out my fabric scraps in an interesting arrangement. Mixing patterns, shapes and textures really adds interest.

Before going to the sewing machine, I use a Frixion Gel Roller by Pilot to draw the tree design onto the muslin. Always test your fabric before using the Frixion Pens. You can read more about these pens here. Once at the sewing machine, I use free-motion stitching to sew the design. I am getting better with free-motion words! Slow and steady and lots of practice!

Inktense Colored Pencils by Derwent add color to the design. The color is transparent and looks like watercolor. Love it! I used a fabric medium by Golden to activate the color.

A bull dog clip was painted with chalk paint by Waverly and used to hang the quilt. Quick and easy and thrifty!
